DONCASTER ST LEGER 1776

The 1st winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 24th September 1776 over the 2 mile course on Cantley Common, was Allabaculia, a brown filly by Sampson, owned by Lord Rockingham. A field of 6 runners contested the race which was worth 150 Sovereigns. (Equivalent to £22,200 in 2017)

In her first race the filly began her career in the Nottingham 25 Guinea Subscription when she was third. She then went to Cantley Common as a well fancied filly, defeating a field of 5 to land the inaugural running of what has today become known as the St Leger Stakes. In 1777 as a 4 year old she ran in Newmarket’s Craven Stakes finishing fourth, and contested a Newmarket Subscription race a week later when she was fifth.
